If you attended the February 1, 2009 service, you know that an “Elevator Speech” is a brief statement intended to quickly explain something and to encourage interest. Even if you weren’t there, read on and enjoy our attempts to develop our own personal UU elevator speech! There is no “correct” speech, but you may wish to develop your own to share the next time someone asks you what UU’s believe.
- It’s a friendly, welcoming group of folks who are diverse in their religious philosophies, but cohesive in their commitment to community and compassion.
- Encourages free thinking, individualism, and self-determination.
- We believe in the divine. It is a religion of many books.
- There is one Source and everyone can access it.
- We draw on the wisdom of all religions and teachers.
- Since there is no set doctrine, it is our responsibility to search for our own truths.
- Service to all humanity and the earth is the bedrock of how we are to be in life. -- Doris Bedinger
- Do it yourself spiritually. Where the church is where we go to find the needed roots. Everyone must at some point choose their own spiritual path. UU’s are people committed to journeying with you. -- Mike Williamson
- Unitarian Universalists believe that our life here on earth is sacred, and that all our actions should reflect that. Love is the center of our relationships with all other peoples. -- Charlie Livingston
- Whatever I want to believe or not and can change like the weather.
- A person who wants to learn about different views, ideas, and beliefs. A person who wants to get the perspective of others and to live in harmony with others and the world. -- Dave Corl
- A belief in only one god who is kind and loving and who will extend universal salvation. It believes in the value of human reason, freedom, justice and democratic ideas. It believes we should include everyone and reject no one.
- Historically Unitarian-Universalism expressed a belief in one god and affirmed that all people were basically good. Over time we have expanded those basic beliefs to include a scientific approach to the search for truth and an appreciation of the environment. -- Glen Lakes
- A fellowship of diverse individuals who come together in search of knowledge, truth, justice, and harmony with the divine. We invite people of all spiritual beliefs to join us on this journey. -- Pat Ackerman
- Unitarian-Universalism arose as a reaction to dogma forced upon individuals. It has a do it yourself strength joined with fellowship to comfort us in the journey. -- Chris Snyder
- Openness to all beliefs in order to find your own individual path to living and giving for a better self and world. (But I don’t really know that’s what I’m here today to learn.)
- We’re a religious community which agrees on the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. We manifest this in service to all, and in encouragement of each. Our only creed is the seven principles, which define how we’ve agreed to be together with each other and all existence.
- UUism is a place without a given creed for people to come together to share their beliefs and spiritual paths, and what their beliefs and paths lead them to do in their daily lives. -- Paul Krumm
- Unitarian Universalism is a creedless faith that believes in the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. We are free to follow our own theology or spiritual path and come together to give support and encouragement to one another on our spiritual journeys. We are all interconnected. What harms one, harms all, so we are responsible for working for peace and justice for all human beings.
